4 Easy Ways to Update Your Fall Makeup

Just like how you clean out your closet to make room for style finds that are on-trend each season, your makeup bag—and your daily get gorgeous go-tos—need a fresh start, too.

SUMMER STAPLE:
Luminous or dewy foundation
FALL FIX:
A matte liquid formula

“A matte foundation that’s on the lighter side, still lets your skin show through and doesn’t make your skin appear dry,” explains Brian Duprey, a makeup artist in New York City, who suggests applying it with a flat foundation brush, not fingers, for a more even and natural application. “Using a brush lets you avoid applying too much, plus makes it easy to build up coverage where you need it and keep it a little more sheer where you need less.” Place a small amount of foundation on the top of your hand, then swipe the brush back and forth over it until it’s absorbed and then apply to skin using small, fluid crisscross strokes. Next, dust a tiny amount of translucent powder on top to keep foundation in place all day.

SUMMER STAPLE:
Golden bronzer
FALL FIX:
Sheer plum or berry blush

“When applied lightly, almost sheer, a deep toned blush adds the same warmth and depth as a bronzer,” says Drupey. Smile and blush on or dab (if you’re using a cream formula) right on the high points—the apples—of cheeks and then blend; for a more contoured effect, dab it right under the cheekbone and then buff it upward toward the apples of your cheeks, he says.

SUMMER STAPLE:
Sheery, berry lip gloss
FALL FIX:
Matte lipstick

“Whether it’s a pale nude or a classic red, switching from a gloss to a matte lip color can instantly update your look because it adds a velvety finish and is saturated with pigment,” says Duprey. “Right before application and touch-ups, apply a light layer of lip balm to keep lips matte and moist—and prevent color from settling into lip lines.” Want to stay in your color comfort zone? Simply choose the more pigmented and matte version of your favorite gloss, suggests Duprey.

SUMMER STAPLE:
Colorful eyeliner (or zero eye makeup)
FALL FIX:
A super light, blended smokey eye

“Choose a neutral matte or metallic shadow of any shade—but some good everyday and universally flattering options are taupe, light gray or a pale mauve—around the top and bottom lash lines and blend color out towards outer corners of the eyes,” says Duprey. “Then finish with a black thickening mascara to build depth at the lash line.”
