Behind the Seams: Alice Temperley

Tell us a little about your Fall Collection.

The Autumn Winter 2012 collection is inspired by the Renaissance Movement & religious paintings from the beginning of the 18th century so the collection is a celebration of opulence; ornate decorative patterns and textures. It is very luxurious and rich with strong, feminine silhouettes – a grown up ‘Polished Folk’ look.

What was your proudest moment as a designer?

There have been many. From opening our first ever shop under our flat in London’s Notting Hill, to being chosen by Anna Wintour to represent designers in their 20’s in a large feature shot by Annie Leibovitz for American Vogue in 2004. And of course, being awarded my MBE by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace in the 2011 New Yeas Honours. I am also very proud over the fact we have been able to stay independent and it goes without saying – seeing my clothes being worn and loved by so many women over the years.

What inspires you?

Anything and everything can inspire – travels, your surroundings, markets, films, music, books, my amazing archive of fabrics…

Who has been your favorite person to dress?

It is such an honor when someone wears your clothes, famous or not. I love seeing friends, family in my clothes, and it’s incredibly flattering to see women out and about wearing one of my designs.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

Materialistically: my blackberry.

What are a few things that are always in your bag?

Blackberry, red Chanel lipstick, my Nikon Camera, sketchbook & pens, Elemis hand cream and my favorite perfume by Miller Harris, Coeur de Fleur.

What is your favorite piece of fashion wisdom?

Don’t follow trends for the sake of it

What are 5 things every girl should have?

A versatile oversized white shirt, a pair of black leather trousers, a knockout cocktail dress, great pair of heels, a waist belt to wear with dresses, cardigan, oversized shirt.
