5 Steps to a Perfect Vacation

Sometimes you just need a vacay, but trip-planning can be quite the undertaking. Here’s a roundup of  must-have apps to help you spend less time planning and more time enjoying the vacation of your dreams.

You know that pang of jealousy you get when you see a friend’s vacation Instagram? That one snapshot can compel you to hop on a plane and see it for yourself. Triptease is a site where travelers upload their FOMO-worthy pics and write a brief entry about the experience there. Think of it as a crowdsourced Fodors.

Find the best rates with the least agony, most legroom and best in-flight experience (snacks! Wi-Fi! DirecTV! Comfy seats!) with Hipmunk and Routehappy, which let you compare flights based on times, travel duration, price and the overall travel experience (known as “agony” on Hipmunk and “happiness score” on Routehappy).

There are hundreds of thousands of hotels around the world. Fortunately, there are several startups that help you find the right one. TheSuitest helps you filter your search for a swanky room based on price, amenities, the value and more. Airbnb helps you find a room, an apartment, a house or even a treehouse in your destination. It’s a great solution if you want to ditch hotel living and experience the town like a local. If you’re more spontaneous, try Hotel Tonight, which lets you book a room at a discounted rate for that night. There’s a room for every personality – hotels are classified as hip, luxe, edgy, basic or solid – and Hotel Tonight is currently in 85+ cities in the U.S and Europe, with more cities soon.

Peek is part travel agent, part tour guide. The site curates top-notch activities in 15 (and counting) cities, displays them beautifully and lets you book onsite, so you don’t have to deal with emailing or calling a bunch of different vendors.  Whether you’re looking for activities that are romantic, under $100, adventurous or off-the-beaten-path, there’s something on Peek, and you can peruse “My Perfect Day” to see what local chefs, fashionistas, celebrities, chefs and musicians love to do in that city.

Ditch the Frommers and Lonely Planet guides — Triposo‘s smartphone apps serve up custom recommendations for things to do and places to go based on your location, the time, the weather and your preferences. The app knows if you prefer museums to gardens, bars to clubs and beaches to parks. The apps have info, maps and recommendations for more than 15,000 destinations in 200 countries, and it also gives you background info on the destination’s history and culture.
