Behind the Seams: Narciso Rodriguez

Narciso Rodriguez is one of those rare designers who continues to define American style year after year. With a tailored, elegant femininity, his collections resonate with quiet beauty and continue to delight critics and shoppers alike. We went behind the seams with RTR favorite Narciso to find out more about his inspiration, learn what’s new for 2011, and more. — Lara

Narciso Rodriguez Profile Rent the Runway

What inspired your Spring 2011 collection?

I was initially inspired by Jennifer Steinkamp’s video installations of the changing seasons, as well as photographs of friends taken in the late ’90s.  Lingerie details were also an inspiration for the collection.

How is the Narciso Rodriguez brand growing in 2011?

We have expanded on our fragrance range to include “Eau de Musc” which was inspired by a radiating light and sensual warmth. It is a new personal favorite of mine.

What new silhouettes or materials did you work with for this collection?

The silhouette has loosened up considerably for this collection. There is an ease that is still body conscious and sexy but in a much more relaxed way. This was achieved through cutting fabrics on the bias and using fluid silks and linens.

What is your favorite part of the design process?

The entire design process is exciting for me.  I look back on the previous season as a starting point, expand on the ideas that started there and try to bring in new concepts to evolve my work. Sketching and draping, as well as fabric trips and selection, are key to the process, too.

How do you celebrate finishing a collection?

After every show, I go to my home in Brazil where there are beaches and tropical rain forests and very little fashion. It helps me decompress and recharge as the next collection is around the corner.

If a girl was to purchase her first Narciso Rodriguez piece, what would you want it to be?

A woman’s first piece from my collection should be a classic dress––something that will become her go-to dress for many occasions and always makes her feel the way she felt when she initially tried it on.
