The 10 Most Iconic Bond Girls

Played by Eva Greene, Vesper Lynd is probably the most reluctant Bond girl to fall for James Bond’s incessant wooing. Even though she is sent to work with Bond, she is also working with the terrorist organization Bond is trying to stop. In addition to her “girl next door” beauty, Eva Greene’s innocent demeanor while she is working towards dueling goals, makes the complexity of the character enthralling.

As a total James Bond film nerd, I am beyond excited for the release of Skyfall. The only part of the films I love more than the actors who have played Agent 007, are the Bond girls. With character names that have made double entendre history, they are a catalogue of some of the most beautiful women in film history. And like a page out of Robert Moore’s “The Power of Seduction,” they use their strength as sexual beings in conjunction with their intellect to get whatever they want. Here is a rundown of my 10 favorite Bond girls in history (in order of appearance).

As a Bond girl in the first James Bond movie ever, Swiss Actress Ursula Andress set the standard for over 5 decades of iconic beauty, strong women, and sexuality as power. She plays the orphaned daughter of an established Jamaican colonial family. Her entrance halfway into the film is perhaps one of the most iconic scenes ever; emerging from the ocean in a white bikini with a dagger strapped to her side. Mariah Carey paid homage to the scene in her music video for “Honey” as does Halle Berry in her role as a Bond girl in “Die Another Day.”

Playing a character with the most absurd name in double entendre history, Honor Blackman was one of three actresses ever who have been older than the actor playing James Bond. In fact, she was the oldest woman to have ever played a Bond girl. Honor Blackman plays the leader of a group of villainous female aviators working with Goldfinger on his plan to achieve total world domination. Who run the world? Pussy Galore.

When Tracy (born Teresa) first meets Agent 007, she says “Teresa is a saint; I’m known as Tracy.” I think that pretty much says it all. In the film, Diana Rigg plays the only child of a head of a major Corsican criminal organization. At the end of the movie, she marries James Bond and is assassinated in a drive by shooting.

“Diamonds Are Forever” is my absolute favorite James Bond movie to date. In addition to having my favorite opening song in the movie series, sung by Shirley Bassey, it is also the most chic of all the Bond films. As Tiffany Case, Jill St. John plays a diamond smuggler working for the world’s most powerful crime organization and has the wardrobe to prove it. Every single one of her looks in the movie sets the scene for what would prove to be the most glamorous decade in modern history.

Played by model Barbara Bach, Anya Amasova was the first Bond girl to prove smarter than Agent 007 and often leads him in their joint plot, not only because of her intelligence but also due to her seductive capabilities. There are no words to describe how sexy Agent XXX is. Barbara Bach has appeared in Playboy several times and is now married to rock star Ringo Starr.

Thanks to French actress Claudine Auger’s stunning beauty and her character’s insane swimsuit collection, Thunderball looks like a cinematic version of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. When Domino meets Bond, she is an Italian actress and kept mistress of villain Emilio Largo. By the end of the film, she has fallen for Bond and saves his life by shooting Largo with a harpoon.

Played by Famke Janssen, Xenia Onatopp was an officer in the Soviet Air Forces who took her strengths to organized crime after the collapse of the USSR. As probably the most badass character in any James Bond movie, she actually gets sexual pleasure from killing, making her the quintessential Femme Fatale. In the Austin Powers movie “The Spy Who Shagged Me,” her character is parodied in the villain Ivana Humpalot. Fitting.

Michelle Yeoh’s portrayal of Colonel Wai Lin, in addition to being the first bond girl of color, is also probably the best acted Bond girl ever. Skilled in martial arts, she is a spy for the Chinese People’s External Security Force. As China’s most powerful spy she and Bond, Brittain’s most powerful spy, are sent to kill each other. But when they are both captured by villain General Chang they join forces to stop him and eventually, in true James Bond movie style, become lovers.

I can’t compile a list of my favorite Bond girls without mentioning Academy Award winning actress Halle Berry’s portrayal of Giacinta Johnson. In addition to having the most slammin’ body ever, Giacinta gets in a kickass sword fight. Nothing is cooler than government agent sword fighting. Giacinta “Jinx” Johnson is often listed alongside Uma Thurman’s work in “Kill Bill” in rankings of the toughest women in film history.
